ProtonMedia welcomes Cheng T. Chen

We take virtual worlds technology seriously here at Proton, and it's thanks to our people. Some of the best technologists in the industry have helped make ProtoSphere what it is today, and they're committed to making it even better for tomorrow.

Now leading that charge, I'm honored to say, is Cheng T. Chen, who's recently joined ProtonMedia as CTO and VP of Engineering. Cheng has been driving force behind the development of major telecom technology for more than 25 years, and will now be bringing his experience, skills, and vision to Proton and ProtoSphere.

Cheng T. Chen Joins ProtonMedia as CTO and VP of Engineering

LANSDALE, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--From Bell Labs to 3Com Corporation to Network Equipment Technologies, and now, ProtonMedia. Cheng T. Chen, one of the top technical minds in the telecommunications industry, will be leading the development of ProtonMedia’s second-generation social collaboration platform, ProtoSphere 2.0. His appointment as CTO and VP of Engineering, announced today, marks another milestone in the evolution of ProtonMedia. The company recently raised $2.5 million in Series ‘A’ financing, and has been expanding its leadership team, sales force, and investment in R&D. Chen has been a driving force behind the development of crucial telecom technology for more than 25 years, and will now be bringing his experience, skills, and vision to bear on the advancement of the ProtoSphere teaming platform.

ProtonMedia’s roadmap for ProtoSphere 2.0 will be unveiled in the coming weeks. Today ProtoSphere provides all the tools teams need to collaborate socially online, including holographic virtual spaces with interactive avatars and bots, document and application sharing, VoIP audio conferencing, text chat, presence awareness, video streaming, blogs, wikis, feeds, role playing simulations, content workflow, and enterprise social networking. And tomorrow it will do even more, as new features and capabilities based on real-world feedback from customers are woven into the 2.0 release.

Chen most recently co-founded Quintum Technologies, and served as President and CEO. He was the driving force behind the development of the company’s VoIP technology. Under Chen’s leadership, Quintum’s global revenue grew to over $20 million, and the company was later acquired by Network Equipment Technologies. Prior to founding Quintum, Chen co-founded AccessWorks in 1993. There he created the patented Async-to-Sync PPP technology, and developed the first ISDN Terminal Adaptor for Internet access, the de-facto standard for the Internet access among terminal adapter vendors worldwide. AccessWorks was later acquired by 3Com Corporation, and Chen became Director of the Engineering in charge of the remote access products under the OfficeConnect brand.

He was also Engineering V.P. and Chief Architect at Teleos Communications from 1986 to 1993, where he pioneered many innovative technologies and products, including Multi-media switch, Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) and outbound dialer, and multi-channel video conferencing unit. Chen spent his early career at Bell Labs, where he developed various packet and circuit switching technologies. He holds a master’s degree in computer science from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, and bachelor’s degree in mathematics from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.
